Just like The Horizon of Aurex, Pyraxis is a fictional planet I created. This time I wanted to create a cosmic entity that feels both mythical, dangerous yet intriguing.
To create a planet that felt ancient and alive, I used thick heavy body gel medium. The surface was built layer by layer using palette knives and thick acrylic paint, creating ridges, cracks, and geological formations that catch natural light from different angles. As you move around the painting, the texture continually changes, making the planet feel tangible rather than simply painted.
To add to the mysterious/mythical vibe, I then used a high number of fine layers and gloss medium. Reapplying this technique layer after layer, and hours of waiting in between, the planet achieved an intense glowing effect.
Against the vast darkness of space, Pyraxis becomes a reminder of both the immense scale of the universe and my imagination of what lies beyond what we know.
If you want to bring this planet into your world, you can find it for sale via this Etsy listing.
Warm regards,
James
